So what is a hermaphrodite? To explain it simply, a hermaphrodite is someone in possession of both male and female sexual organs. Being humans, this is not something that is normal to our species but I didn’t really need to say that part.
I only learned this word lately to be honest when Lady Gaga and Caster Semenya seem to be the latest household (:P) names attached to “hermaphrodite-ism”, a term dubbed by myself, or if you want to be more politically correct, intersexuality. I think that Lady Gaga’s ‘androgen insensitivity syndrome’ is completely irrelevant to the public unless it is true. So I’m not even going to talk on that one, apart from the fact that this time, at least the scandal is creative!
With Caster Semenya, an 18 year old South African athlete, the concern seems to be mildly important because of the nature of competitiveness and creating an even playing field.
As for privacy, most of the people in the public eye depend on the public for their success and so if there is no real ‘right to privacy’ that I think they should hide behind. If there is something they want hidden, they should just try really hard to cover it up. If it leaks, tough.
Anyway, the only opinion that I have that really matters on this topic is – I have nothing against intersexuality and this applies to most things – if you’re born with it, it’s natural.
